New Features Being Added to the Hyatt Visa Credit Card

Beginning October 1, you’ll experience a few new, and much needed, additions to the Chase Hyatt Visa credit card. Here’s a peek at the email I received:

The new 2x point multiplier bonus for spend at restaurants, airlines and car rentals is something this credit card has needed for quite some time now. Outside of spend at Hyatt hotels, there really wasn’t much incentive to put your spend on this card.

The stay/night credit is an interesting addition. When you put $20,000 in annual spend on the Hyatt Visa, you’ll get 2 stay / 5 night credits. With $40,000 in annual spend on the Hyatt Visa, you’ll get “an additional 3 stay / 5 night credit” which would bring your total credits to 5 stays / 10 nights. That’s not bad if you’re just a few stays/nights away from requalifying. Of course that means you’d also have to be close to the spend threshold on the credit card.

Use Your Hyatt VISA and Get a 50% Points Bonus

I received a card in the mail this past weekend about a special promotion for the Hyatt VISA from Chase. Between July 1, 2012 and August 31, 2012, using the card for everyday purchases like gas, groceries and dining will earn 1.5 Hyatt Gold Passport points instead of just 1 point. In addition, using the card at Hyatt hotels will earn 3.5 points per dollar spent, instead of 3 points.

There is no language on the card that would indicate this is a targeted offer and there is no registration required. If you did not receive this notice in the mail, I’d advise contacting Chase to see if your card/account is eligible for the bonus points.

While this is a nice way to entice card holders to put some additional spend on the card, it still feels like it’s not enough. So we can somewhat compare apples to apples, the Chase Freedom card’s quarterly 5% bonus categories (for the same earnings period as the Hyatt VISA promotion) are gas and restaurants. I say “somewhat compare” because you’ll need the Chase Freedom and Sapphire Preferred cards in order to convert the Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt Gold Passport points.

Hyatt Visa Cardholders Should Check Points For Converted Hyatt Hotels

If you’re a Hyatt Visa cardholder who recently stayed at a Hyatt House that was converted from a Hotel Sierra, you should confirm that your points correctly posted to your account.

The name “Hyatt” needs to appear as the merchant on your statement in order to receive the 3 points per dollar benefit. However, the converted hotels may still be showing “Hotel Sierra” as the merchant. So instead of receiving 3 points per dollar spent at what is now technically a Hyatt hotel, you’re only receiving 1 point per dollar.

Hyatt and Chase Kicking the Tires on Possible New Benefits to Hyatt Visa

Last month, Gary at View From the Wing mentioned that updates are coming to the Chase Hyatt Visa credit card. He shared some of the ideas that were being thrown around.

Last week, Milepoint member Liucoke received a survey asking which types of new perks and benefits would entice them to use the Hyatt Visa more often. Free Hyatt Platinum Status For 90 Days With Visa Signature Card

Through May 11, 2012, you can register a Visa Signature credit card and get complimentary Hyatt Platinum status for 90 days. This status normally requires 5 stays or 15 nights in a calendar year and the top perks include free internet, 2pm late checkout and a 15% bonus on your base points.

You can stretch the value of this complimentary status by applying for the Hyatt Visa credit card. Once you’re approved for the card, you’ll receive two free nights plus two suite upgrade certificates thanks to your new Platinum membership . In order to use these certificates, you must be on a paid stay. You cannot use these certificates on an award stay.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Hyatt Visa

There are two credit card options available to anyone looking for an extra way to earn Hyatt Gold Passport points. One is the Hyatt Visa and the other is the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Looking only at each card’s potential to earn Gold Passport points,  the edge goes to the Sapphire Preferred.

The Hyatt Visa earns 3 points per dollar on spend at Hyatt hotels and 1 point per dollar on everything else. Co-branded credit cards will always give you the most points when spending at their respective business. Unless you’re practically living at a Hyatt, you’ll want to give more weight to how many points you can earn outside of Hyatt. Without that 2x multiplier to bridge the gap between one and three points, this really hampers your ability to earn additional points.

Hyatt Announces First Global Promotion of 2012

Hyatt recently announced their new promotion for 2012 to participants of this years oneworld MegaDo. The Points Guy reports that Hyatt’s new promotion will last from February 1 to April 30, 2012.

Here are the highlights of this promotion (taken from The Points Guy’s post):

  1. The promo is based on nights, not stays
  2. Bonuses are cumulative, so you get each level threshold when you hit those number of nights, plus any prior bonuses
  3. You get a 25% bonus if you have the Chase Hyatt Visa
